Probing of Alignment and Orientation using Electric-dipole-forbidden Transitions

چکیده
The probing of aligned and oriented molecules or atoms by electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole transitions is described using the spherical tensor formalism. The case of cylindrical symmetry is treated explicitly. It is shown how moments of t h e initial angular momentum distribution up to rank 4 are obtainable using electric quadrupole radiation. The interference between electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole transitions is also treated.

Near-field manipulation of spectroscopic selection rules on the nanoscale.
In conventional spectroscopy, transitions between electronic levels are governed by the electric dipole selection rule because electric quadrupole, magnetic dipole, and coupled electric dipole-magnetic dipole transitions are forbidden in a far field. We demonstrated that by using nanostructured electromagnetic fields, the selection rules of absorption spectroscopy could be fundamentally manipul...
متن کاملMagnetic dipole transitions in the hydrogen molecule
In homonuclear molecules, such as H2, the electric dipole transitions are strongly forbidden, and the transitions between rovibrational states are of the electric quadrupole type. We show however, that magnetic dipole transitions also take place, although are significantly weaker. We evaluate the probabilities of such transitions between several lowest rotational states and compare them with th...

Absorption and luminescence excitation spectra of Xe/CF(4) mixtures were studied in the vacuum UV region at high resolution using tunable synchrotron radiation. Pressure-broadened resonance bands and bands associated with dipole-forbidden states of the Xe atom due to collision-induced breakdown of the optical selection rules are reported. The spectra display in addition numerous satellite bands...
متن کاملThe FERRUM Project : Experimental and theoretical transition rates of forbidden [ Sc ] lines and radiative lifetimes of metastable Sc levels ⋆
Context. In many plasmas, long-lived metastable atomic levels are depopulated by collisions (quenched) before they decay radiatively. In low-density regions, however, the low collision rate may allow depopulation by electric dipole (E1) forbidden radiative transitions, so-called forbidden lines (mainly M1 and E2 transitions) . If the atomic transition data is known, these lines are indicators o...
متن کاملLXI. Radiative E1, E2, E3, and M1 transition probabilities for Fe IV
Radiative decay rates (A) and line strengths (S ) are presented for a large number of electric dipole allowed (E1) and forbidden electric quadrupole (E2), octupole (E3) and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions in Fe IV. The ion is amongst the most complex iron ions and exhibits effects of strong electron correlation. It has closely spaced fine structure levels from seven configurations: 3s23p63d5, ...
